Carlo's final Athens Olympic result: Quarterfinalist

Friday 27 August 2004

(6:27pm): Carlo WINS first round 8 (-1) to 4 (-2)! He'll now compete against Gabriel Sagastume of Guatemala in the Quarter Finals.

(7:28pm): Channel 7 have just mentioned Carlo's first round win and that coverage of Carlo is coming up soon! ("within the hour" -- 7:47pm)

(8:27pm): So close! Carlo is defeated in the quarter finals by 1 point to Gabriel Sagastume of Guatemala. A very close match with Carlo working extremely hard and using several attempts to score with 2-point head kicks in the third round, but not being able to close the gap. Sagastume was able to hold on in the final seconds to clinch a berth in the semi-final.

Carlo still may have a chance to fight for the bronze medal in the Repechage rounds, but only if Sagastume wins his semi final match and reaches the final.

What is repechage?
For the Olympics, it is a competition system where the fighters defeated by the two finalists play off through two rounds to compete in the bronze medal match. In the first Olympic repechage round, the two competitors who lost to the finalist (the loser of the preliminary round and the loser of the quarter final round) fight each other. The winner of that match then fights the loser of the semi final from the other half of the draw. The winners of those two matches (one from each half of the draw) then compete for the bronze medal. This link might help to the -68kg men's repechage draw.

Stay tuned for an update at approximately 11:40pm to see if Sagastume makes the final in his semi final match against Huang Chih Hsiung of Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), who won bronze in the -58kg division in Sydney and won the World Championships in 2003 as a bantamweight.

And remember Australia has three more Taekwondo athletes competing over the weekend -- with Daniel Trenton (Sydney 2000 Silver medallist) and Caroline Bartasek (Olympic debut, winning bronze in the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament earlier this year) competing tomorrow, and Tina Morgan (Olympic debut and gold medallist at the world Olympic qualifying tournament last December) going for gold on Sunday!

(8:40pm): Quarter final match on Channel 7 right now. Great to see Carlo taking Taekwondo into the Australian livingroom with expert commentary by Sydney Olympic Taekwondo gold medallist Lauren Burns! You might have heard Lauren mention Carlo's work as an instructor at Hall's Taekwondo and his involvement with the Little Ninja classes for 4, 5 and 6 year olds!

(11:40pm): Carlo's chance to fight for the bronze medal is over after Huang Chih Hsiung of Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) wins the semi final over Gabriel Sagastume of Guatemala (9(-2) to 5(0)) and advances to the gold medal match. Huang is the current bantamweight world champion and bronze medallist from Sydney in the -58kg division, and will be hoping to add to the two gold his country won in the lightest weight Olympic divisons yesterday. His win means Carlo cannot compete in the repechage.

(12:02am): It's Iran vs Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) for the gold medal match, as Hadi Saei Bonehkohal (Sydney bronze medallist) wins the second semi final for Iran in a very close match against South Korea (11 (-2) to 10 (-1)). Both players are guaranteed a better medal than each of their bronze results in Sydney (as Huang competed in the lighter division four years ago, where he won bronze).

Tuesday 17 August 2004

Carlo has arrived safely in Athens with our team of Olympic Taekwondo athletes and officials. Carlo wanted to say thank you to everyone who came out to the airport and said good bye before he headed off with the team.

And thank you too for all the fantastic messages of support that keep flowing in!

Don't forget to be watching on Friday August 27 as Carlo competes! We'll post results updates on this site as soon as we can (being received via SMS live from Athens!).

Lauren Burns will be commentating for Channel 7, so no doubt Carlo's fights will be broadcast when his fights are on. As Carlo doesn't get his draw until the day before, the TV guide may not know exactly when they will be broadcasting his fights. So keep checking the TV guide closer to the event.

Go Carlo!
