Following his gold medal winning performance at the Gold Coast three weeks ago, Tom Afonczenko is set to travel to the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra this weekend to contest the next round of the Olympic Selection process. The selection process is based on cumulative points over a series of events. The top three athletes currently in each weight division are eligible to compete. Tom currently sits at number two under Safwan Khalil a very experienced international fighter. Tom has been training exceptionally hard and is looking amazing as he enters this tournament. We wish him all the best this weekend!!!! Tom will fly home Saturday night after competition to compete at the Victorian Championships on Sunday with his other Team Carlo team mates. Good luck everybody!!!

What an amazing weekend of competition on the Gold Coast! About 50 Team Carlo athletes and supporters headed up to Broadbeach on the Gold Coast Friday May 13. We kicked off the weekend with a recovery session at Kurrawa SLS beach, which was a bit nippy. We met back at the hotel that night for a briefing on nutrition and recovery before heading off for our team dinner. It was great to see our junior athletes making some great meal decisions!
The Tan’s Gold Coast Open, held at Carrara Stadium was a huge success last year so this year brought greater numbers with close to 500 competitors. We met for day one of competition early Saturday morning and boarded our chartered coach. Our team were looking sharp and out athletes were ready for a day of competition. We had a great day on the courts both sparring and in poomsae and our athletes walked away with lots of medals and good experiences. It was a long day one and the competition finished around 5pm just in time to take most of the team back to Broadbeach.
In addition to the Gold Coast Open, Carrara was also the venue for the first round of Olympic Selection trials. We had four athletes entered in this competition Saturday night, all competiting for the maximum75 points towards Olympic Selection for London 2012. All of our team did amazingly under extreme pressure. Alana Pozzebon had to retire due to injury and came away with a bronze medal. Fighting close to 1am in a stadium that had turned bitterly cold, Tom Afonczenko contested and won his final (4th) fight and came away with a gold medal and the maximum 75 points up for grabs. The team will next compete at the Australian Institute of Sport in three weeks to contest the next round. Congratulations to our team!
A little tired, we came back at 8am the next morning for day two of competition. Again another massive day with great results, great sportsmanship and great experiences. And in true Team Carlo form, our very own World Champion Steve Currie had the last fight of the day! He was physically and mentally tired from the night before, the matts were being ripped up from around him and everybody was leaving the venue, but he dug deep and walked away with the gold medal! Thanks to the coaches and parents (Dean & Ang) that stayed behind to watch him he/we really appreciate it!
We must not forget to mention the job Team Carlo’s Frank Magliozzi does as a very effective referee/head of court at these tournamanets. Refereeing is a very hard job and we are lucky to have Frank represent our Club.
Thanks mums, dads, grandparents, siblings and friends that made this such an enjoyable trip. Competitions are long and exhausting and everybody did Team Carlo proud by being supportive for the whole team. Travelling as a team is a great experience for the athletes and we look forward to our next trip together!
