Happy New Year to all of our members and their families and a special welcome to our new Members at our new school in Airport West. We hope you all enjoyed a wonder Christmas or summer break and are ready to take on the challenges for 2011.
We had an exciting end to the 2010 with Airport West opening in October. We have built groups in all our classes and Katrina and her team are doing a great job in the training hall. Preston school member Cleo Talarico proudly sits as our visual on the front of the building and she’s very hard to miss as you drive by!
Both junior and senior Christmas parties were lots of fun and we look forward to sharing them with our new members at Airport West this Christmas. There were plenty of awards given to our most improved students as well as our Junior and Senior Athletes of the Year. Congratulations to all recipients.
Just a reminder that TERM 1 commences Monday 31st January. Please refer to the newsletter given out during class or at the grading for your class schedule.
We look forward to seeing you all in the coming weeks and helping you achieving your goals!

The wet weather didn’t dampen any spirits on Friday night as students and families got together to celebrate a big year at the Junior Christmas Party. It was great to see so many of the juniors building stronger friendships with their classmates and instructors as they made their way through the equipment at Kidz City. The pizzas arrived from La Porchetta Niddrie, hot and aplenty – and we’re still amazed at how many the little people got through!
Another important part of the night is to celebrate our students’ growth over the year and recognise those that have shown the greatest personal development. These awards are non-competitive and are voted (by secret ballot) by the student’s particular class instructors. We are happy to announce the following Most Improved Students for 2010:
Taekinda – Alyssa Sallese
Ninja Group 1 – Aoibh Smith
Ninja Group 2 – Billy Michaelides
Ninja Group 3 – Sumaya Atwa
Warrior beginner – Liam Aernouts
Warrior intermediate – Lucas Perry
Warrior Advanced – Christina Karalis
Warrior Black Belt – Damian Seddon
Well done to all winners on a great year of training.
Our competitive award for the year is a combined sparring and poomsae award based on the athlete that has shown the best dedication to training, sportsmanship, attitude on and off the court and of course results. This is always a very tough award to give as we have some amazing athletes amongst us. Our winner has had a great year with some outstanding results and is also the current Victorian and Australian Champion. Our 2010 Junior Athlete of the Year goes to Will Afonczenko. Congratulations Will on a great year!
Here’s some photos from Friday night.

The Australian Institute of Sport played host to this year’s Australian Open and National Championships 21 – 24th October. In total, there were close to 2,000 compeitiors from all over the world. Team Carlo sent a team of 20 black belts to compete in both Poomsae and Sparring.
On day one of competition Vincent Papandrea competed in the poomsae division winning his first National Championship bronze medal. With some tough international competitiors in his division he did extremely well to achieve this.
The sparring division over the last two days also brought some fantastic results with four National Championship gold medals. Congratulations goes to Kyla Tabone and Will Afonczenko on their performances and to Tom Afonczenko who won gold medals in both his junior and senior divisions. Our silver medal winners included Kyah English, Chris Caserta, Thomas Caserta and our bronze medal winners Madaleine Bove, and Hills Kam.
It is important to acknowledge all of our competitors, even those that did not place. Poomsae and sparring are both very competitive and it takes much practice and discipline. Success however should not always be measured on medals awarded, but on the journey our athletes endure. Well done to you all!
Now nationals is over it’s time to hit pre-season!

Congratulations to Tom who travelled with the Australian National Team to Manchester, England to compete at the 2010 British Open. After winning his division in Australia Tom was eligible to enter the junior under 55kg division and was also given the opportunity to compete in the under 59kg division at the Open.
On day 1 of competition Tom fought Belgium in the first round and beat him convincingly 6-4. Tom went into his next fight feeling the affects of dehydration, fatigue and jet lag having had to lose 1.5kg’s in the past 24 hours to make his weight division. After 2 rounds of no scores Tom lost marginally in the quarter finals to the home player from England. Tom had the rest of the day to recover, ice his injuries and mentally prepare for the under 59kg division the next day. On the second day of competition, Tom found his fighting spirit again and went into the competition playing more of his own game. He again got to the quarter finals, losing a very tough fight against England 7-6 in the last 10 seconds.
Well done Tom on this great achievement. You have done your club and fellow students proud. We look forward to seeing you developing even further.
