UPDATE
FROM CARLO
23
January 2004
Hi everyone!
Firstly, thank
you for all of your well wishes and emails. My knee is recovering
well and I am back at training in the lead up to Olympic Regional
Qualifications in Thailand. As yet I haven't officially been selected
and won't find that out until the 2nd of February. As soon as I
know whether I will be going I will post it on the site.
I have had a
great response to the Olympic Diary I wrote for the latest Australasian
Taekwondo Magazine, which I will continue to write in the lead up
to Athens, I am so glad you enjoyed reading it and that it gives
you a better insight into the life of an athlete. I have had lots
of queries about the documentary that is covering my journey to
Athens and as yet you can't purchase a copy but I will let you know
when it will be available and when it will be released for television.
I am very excited for you to share my journey.
Thank you again
for all of your support and encouragement, it means alot! Watch
this space for the announcement of who will go to the Qualifications
in Thailand! Keep training hard and remember; anything is possible
if you believe strongly enough.
Carlo

World
Olympic Taekwondo Qualifications in Paris
December
2003
Friday
5 December 2003 --
The World Olympic
Taekwondo Qualifications in Paris have officially started and the
first player to try and qualify was Tumay Humza
competing in the -58 Olympic division. Tumay was able to go to the
qualifications when Carlo withdrew due to injury.
What a great
experience for Tumay to compete against some of the best players
in his division. Tumay had a bye first round and then went on to
win his first match. Tumay then met Uzbekistan and again won. In
his third match he met Paul Green from the UK and unfortunately
lost this match. Well done Tumay, what a great effort and at such
a prestigious event. We look forward to seeing a big future in Taekwondo
for Tumay.
Only the top
three from each division qualifies their country for the Olympics.
Qualifying in
the -58 Olympic male division were:
1. Chinese
Taipei, 2. Spain, 3. Philippines
Also qualifying
on the first day was -49 female Olympic division:
1. Indonesia,
2. Venezuela, 3. Thailand, 3. Cuba
Check out Carlo's
website daily to read how the Australians are going
and who will qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Tomorrow Carmen
Marton competes in the Olympic -57 division. Good Luck
Carmen!
Saturday
6 December 2003 --
Australian
Carmen Marton competed in the female Olympic -57
division. Carmen won her first fight against Argentina and was then
unlucky to draw Korea who she lost to. Bad luck Carmen. Hopefully
we will see Carmen compete at the Regional Qualifications in February.
Qualifying in
Carmen's division were:
1. Korea,
2. Italy, 3. France
Qualifying in
Carlo's division (Olympic -68) were:
1. Korea,
2. Sth Africa, 3. Venezuela, 3. Italy (Carlo Molfetta).
Tina
Morgan WON the Olympic 67+ division on 6 December! What
a great effort and Australia's first team member to qualify! Tina
met hometown France in the final, but obviously wasn't fazed. Also
qualifying in Tina's division were:
1. Australia,
2. France, 3. Italy, 3. China
Qualifying in
the Olympic 80+ division were:
1. Korea,
2. Denmark, 3. Venezuela
Congratulations
again Tina! A proud moment for Australia! Daniel

Good Luck Daniel!
Monday
8 December 2003 --
Daniel
Trenton was unlucky not to qualify in the Olympic -80 division.
Daniel lost
to Iran in the fourth round. Iran went on to win silver and France
won gold. Third place went to Steven Lopez (USA) and fourth went
to Azerbaijan. Daniel won three of his matches against Finland,
Czechoslovakia, and Great Britain. Daniel will head over to the
Regional Qualifications with Carlo in February, where hopefully
Australia qualifies the remaining three Olympic spots.
1. France,
2. Iran, 3. USA, 4. Azerbaijan
Well done to
all the team participating at the World Qualifications in Paris,
and congratulations to Tina again for her gold medal win!

Carlo
out for the World Olympic Qualifiers
30
October 2003
Carlo will not
be competing at the Olympic World Qualifiers in Paris in December.
Carlo suffered a knee injury (grade 2 medial tear) at the World
Championships in September and as such won't have enough preparation
time for such a major event with so little lead up time.
Carlo will instead
focus on the second round of Olympic qualifiers which will be held
in Thailand in February and will be for the Asian Region.
Carlo has taken
some time out from his busy schedule and gone to QLD to be with
his family and to work on his recovery.
Carlo will be
back in Melbourne in the New Year. We wish Carlo all the best in
his recovery and preparation for the Olympic Qualifiers in February.
Good Luck to
the athletes chosen to compete for Australia (tbc) at the World
Qualifiers in December. We will let you know how they go!

Results
from World Championships in Garmish-Partenkirchen, Germany
Sunday 28 September 2003
- Carlo wins
first fight against Switzerland 8 to 1 at World Championships
on last day of competition
- Carlo wins
2nd match with Jordan in last seconds with score 7 to 8 (-2)!
Nerve-racking stuff!
- Another great
win to Carlo against Cuba 14 (-1) to 12
- Carlo lost
in Quarter-Final against World Champion Azerbaijan 5 to 4 (-1).
Great effort Carlo, so close to a medal!
FULL
REPORT
Carlo had a
great day of fighting, and after Carmen Marton's loss was Australia's
last chance for another medal. Carlo had Switzerland first up, which
was an easy first match for him beating the Swiss player 8 –1.
Carlo then met Jordan who was more of a match and made Carlo earn
his win. It was a nerve-racking match that Carlo won in the last
seconds with a score of 7 – 8(-2). Carlo then had Cuba who
had been fighting well all day and again made Carlo work hard winning
with a close score of 14(-1) – 12.
Carlo was then
in the quarterfinals against 2001 World Champion, Azerbaijan. This
was a match worth waiting for and equaled that of the one they both
fought at World Cup 2002, which Carlo had won. Carlo went down in
the first round with a twisted knee, as it was the second time he
had a bad clash in the same area, so you could see he wasn’t
in his normal top form for the rest of the match. AZE scored the
points early so Carlo had to play catch up to get back in the game,
which was great for the crowd because he scored some great kicks
to get close to the AZE. The score was 4 – 5 AZE’s way
at the start of the last round and you could see Carlo was pacing
himself for the last minute of the match due to his knee but it
was a little too late as Carlo couldn’t make that final score,
and wasn’t helped with the referee not calling time when AZE
ran out of the ring. It was a great fight by Carlo and a disappointing
loss for him and Australia, as our last medal chance.
AZE went on to win bronze
after losing to Korea. Korea won the final against USA, but not
without an official protest from USA as the referee seemed to favour
Korea. Germany won the other bronze medal.
Question
to Carlo: "How did you feel about the day especially against
Azerbaijan in the quarterfinal?"
Carlo had
to say: "I was happy with how I fought all day and of
course it was disappointing to lose in the quarterfinal, especially
against AZE, who I had beaten at the World Cup last year. I knew
he was going to be a tough opponent and I was upset that my knee
went so early in the match, so I really had to change my tactics
to compensate. I was hoping to catch him by surprise with a kick
to the flank but unfortunately it didn’t go my way and I ran
out of time. The last match we had I beat him in the final seconds
by catching him by surprise, unfortunately today it just wasn’t
my day. It would have been great to win a medal for Australia, especially
coming so close, but I am still happy with my result and the way
I fought"
Since returning to Australia
Carlo had his knee checked out and the results were that Carlo has
a Grade 2 medial ligament tear, so will be out of action for a least
five weeks. The World Qualifications for the Olympics are in the
first week of December in Paris, so Carlo will unlikely be ready
for such a big event. There is another qualifications in February,
so Carlo will most likely have to compete in those qualifications.
We will keep you posted when things are confirmed for Carlo. We
are wishing him a speedy recovery!

World Championship
selections
Carlo won World Championship selection in Sydney on Saturday 14th
of June.
Carlo's first
fight was with Chris Milligan, a fellow team mate and room mate
at the Asian Championships. Carlo had a convincing win of 14-3.
Carlo then went into the round robin and met Shane Whiteway. It
was another dominant match from Carlo winning with a score of 14-2.
Carlo's third opponent withdrew, taking Carlo straight into the
deciding final with Humza Jubran.
Humza is originally
from Jordan and was one of the Australian teams guides when they
competed at the Asian Championships in Jordan last year. He is now
studying in Sydney. This was always going to be a tough match for
Carlo with a great player like Humza coming into his division. The
crowd weren't disappointed, it was a great match! The final scores
were close with Carlo only narrowly winning 9-8.
Humza will
be a great asset for Australia in the future! Congratulations Carlo,
a great effort. Carlo will head off to the World Championships in
Germany from the 24th - 28th of September.

Carlo wins
Silver at prestigious Dutch Open in Eindhoven, Holland.
Carlo had 6
fights in total, winning his first fight to Egypt 7-6. Then Carlo
defeated Norway 11-4. Carlo knocked Croatia out in his 3rd fight.
In the quarter-final, Carlo beat Sweden 7-5. The semi-final saw
Carlo defeat Spain 11-5. Carlo fought home-town Netherlands in the
final and lost 9-11. Carlo broke his little toe in the 2nd round
and may need an operation.
Well done Carlo,
a great effort! Your record still stands as the only Australian
to win the Dutch Open (1997)!

22nd March
2003:Carlo
wins Croatian Open Olympic event. Carlo beat Croatia 6-2. Then
Carlo won against World Champion from Italy after Italy retired
with injury.

Carlo's win. Well done Carlo!

SEP (Sports
Excellence Program) European trip
The SEP (Sports
Excellence Program) European trip has just been announced, and Carlo
will be leaving Melbourne on 18 March to go to the Croatian Open,
where he will participate in two days of competition.
The team will
then attend the Dutch Open, which Carlo won in 1997 and will be
keen to regain the title. It should be an exciting trip with two
big competitions and three days of fighting! We wish Carlo the best.

Australian
Olympic Trials
Carlo wins
the first of the Australian Olympic trials held in Sydney on December
7th 2002.
Carlo competed
in the 68kg Olympic weight division for the trials, where he met
three opponents after having a bye in the first round.
Carlo's first
opponent was fellow Hall's training partner Adam Buhagiar. Carlo
won easily with a score of 10 - 0. Carlo then met Daniel Jukic and
again had a clear win of 15 - 2. In the final Carlo met his close
friend Peter Townsend. Carlo finished off the day in fine form with
a win of 22 - 4.

Daniel Trenton
(R) presents Carlo with the Trenton Trophy after he scored a mammoth
22 points in the final.
The highest
score from the final of all of the boys divisions was presented
with the Trenton Trophy and with such a high scoring match
in Carlo's final, Carlo was the clear winner.
Congratulations
Carlo on a fantastic effort for the first of the Olympic trials.

Kid's Cheer
Competition
"Follow
the Noise" cheer competition
The winner of
the teamcarlo cheer competition has been decided and after such
a great response Carlo had trouble picking his favourite! We hope
you will agree with the winning cheer, which we think is pretty
cool!
The winner was
five year old Leon Mitris, who is currently studying Taekwondo
himself and is a big fan of Carlo's, here is his cheer:
"C'mon
guys, let's make some noise;
The boy from Oz has got the poise;
So let's be loud and let's be bold;
Teamcarlo's here to win the gold!"
We love the
cheer Leon and can't wait to start using it at Carlo's next event!
Thank you to
all the cheer competition entrants. We will be having another competition
for the kids soon, so keep an eye out for that!
Leon won a teamcarlo
t-shirt, a personally signed World Cup poster where Carlo won Austalia's
first silver medal and a personally signed teamcarlo
postcard. Well done Leon!
Carlo's next
major competition will be the first of the Olympic trials on the
7th December. We look forward to hearing the new teamcarlo cheer
at such an important event and if you haven't got your t-shirts
we still have some left, just go to our order
page.

World Cup
- Japan: Results
Carlo
wins silver at the World Cup in Japan!
It was a great
day for Carlo with some tough matches and some very close calls.
His first match with Spain had the team almost having a group
heartache, with Carlo scoring a point in the last ten seconds to
secure the win. He then beat Iran by five points to meet
the World Champion Azerbaijan in the semi-finals. Another
close match but Carlo's experience won through and again he scored
in the final seconds to win by a point. The final saw Carlo meet
Italy, the same opponent that had caused all the controversy
at the World Championships! The rematch was certainly not short
of it's own controversy with Carlo unlucky with a lot of his points.
Carlo made history as the first silver medallist at a World Cup
for Australia. Well done Carlo!
I asked Carlo
how the day felt:
"I felt
great going into today's matches, very focused and relaxed. I
knew my draw was going to be hard and I have some tough fighters
in my division but if anything that just challenged me more. I
was glad I had a close first fight in Spain because it really
fired me up for the rest of my matches and made me aware of how
I had to be quick off the mark and make the most of every second
in the ring. I was really happy with my fight with the World Champion
from Azerbaijan and the fact that I could beat him under so much
pressure and with only seconds to go. In training it is something
you are always preparing for and I was happy with the results.
As for the final it was great to have the opportunity to meet
Italy again after what happened at the World Championships and
bottom line is he is a great fighter and he gave me some things
to work with in terms of my training. Overall I felt the day put
into practise a lot of what I have been working for and it is
that one step closer to Gold!"

Website
Launch
Sunday the
26th of May marked the official launch of the website teamcarlo.com.au.
It was a great day that not only launched the website but also raised
funds for Carlo to train and compete overseas in the lead up to
the Athens 2004 Olympics.
The day started
with the screening of a video compile of Carlo practising taekwondo
at age six, right through to competing at the 2000 Olympics. It
was a great opportunity for those watching to reflect on how long
Carlo has been practising his craft and what an amazing athlete
he is. The video has inspired the television release documentary
that is currently been filmed on Carlo. Olympic gold medallist,
Lauren Burns attended and after watching the video relived some
of her memories of the Olympics and how Carlo was on the right track
for 2004.
Certainly one
of the highlights of the day was the auctioning off of framed items.
Auction Champion Michael McCarthy sold off the pieces that consisted
of a limited edition Essendon Football poster, an autographed photo
of actor Hugh Jackman and of course photos of Carlo himself. One
of the photos of Carlo sold for $450!
Fiona Armstrong
won the 1st prize in the raffle, a trip for two to the Gold Coast
for six nights courtesy of Harvey World Travel Highpoint, and everyone's
favourite masseuse Ronnie Branca won none other than the massage
package (well about time someone gave him one for a change!)
The day was
a huge success and most importantly a lot of fun. We hope those
of you who missed out will be able to attend the next function we
have for Carlo as he gets closer to the Athens Olympics.
To those of
you who attended, thank you for a making the day special and supporting
Carlo. We have had over 1,000 visitors to the site (and thousands
of hits!) since it was launched, so we hope everyone is enjoying
the site.
Keep sending
in your feedback and suggestions too, as the site will always be
growing and so will TEAM CARLO! Remember just follow the noise
.
