National Championships 2009

Thank you to the 30 students, their familes and friends that made the National Championships such a great success over the four days of competition from October 1 – 4.  Queensland turned on the weather and Team Carlo turned the heat up on court.  Poomse kicked things off on Thursday with medals going to all competitors. After two days of Poomsae, colour belts hit the mats on Saturday followed by black belts on the final day of competition. Some of you may have been lucky enough to see black belt Steve Currie’s nail bitter match where he was almost knocked out in the first minute to pull it together and win his match with a flurry of head kicks.  The whole stadium stood up and cheered Steve home to victory!  Well done everybody for your great efforts:

Gold Medalists –  National Champions 2009
Poomsae – Chris Rabba
Sparring – Daniel Russo, Hugh Erwin, Tina Santucci, Peter Tilley, Todd Radge, Kyla Tabone,

Silver Medalists
Poomsae – Yvette Detrich
Sparring – Samantha Lazenkas, Will Afonczenko

Bronze Medalists
Poomsae – Clara Sultana
Sparring – Alana Pozzebon, Steven Currie, Tom Afonczenko, Flynn Gregory, Shanra Clement, Joshua Fox, Amanda Caserta, Kyah English

Congratulations also to those who didn’t medal on the day but performed to the best of their ability.

What’s next?  Pre-season has commenced for the Athlete Program and will run through until competition season in 2010.  This is the time of year where we prepare the body and mind for the challenges faced in sparring or poomsae competition.  Please check the notice board and Athlete page for any changes to training scheules on Saturdays.

Big crowd, Big fights, Great night!

Congratulations to Matthew Caserta, Teen Athlete, who competed Friday 6th September in his first professional fight.  Close to 550 people gathered at Moonee Valley to watch a number of great fighters compete.  The new Adidas electronic chest guards were in use on the night and are still going to take some getting used to.  Matthew soon found out the difficulties of scoring for and against with this new technology. With instructor Adam Wright in his chair, Matthew fought an exciting match all the way to the end against a well matched fighter in Daniel Raji.  We congratulate Matthew on his performance and look forward to hearing what he learnt from the evening.

Head Instructor Carlo Massimino and Sydney 2000 Gold Medalist Lauren Burns sat ringside providing the TV coverage during the evening, whilst third Dan Black Belt and resident Team Carlo referee Frank Magliozzi was one of the court officiators.

Again, we had a great club turn out to support Matthew and we thank everyone for coming along to cheer him on.  We look forward to our club’s involvement at the next event.

Pictures to follow………
